To combat the recent surge in DNS-related outages, DNS Made Easy has announced a new initiative to increase education and adoption of Secondary DNS Services.
This past weekend kicked off the biggest quarter for ecommerce businesses and online retailers. This holiday season is already on track to likely be the most eventful according to new reports raising concerns over DNS security and businesses’ abilities to ensure site availability. DNS Made Easy has launched a new initiative to alleviate these concerns through educating clients about the benefits of implementing a Secondary DNS provider.
While there is no surefire way to prevent attacks, there are ways to leverage DNS management tools to ensure 100% site availability.
“This holiday season, we are encouraging all organizations dependent on the Internet to use Secondary DNS Services to maintain site availability even during attacks,” says President of DNS Made Easy Steven Job.
Secondary DNS works by creating a clone of the domain’s zone file, which is then hosted on DNS Made Easy’s IP Anycast + network. When the primary domain fails, the secondary provider instantly takes over the traffic load with no appreciable effects to end-users. These services are easy to set up and affordable for businesses of all sizes. You can see an even more detailed explanation in our Secondary DNS infographic.

Last year multiple major retailers were downed by overloaded servers or DNS-based attacks. Some reported losing hundreds of thousands of dollars per hour or even per minute during the outages. But according to new studies, the frequency and severity of outages this year will be substantially greater. In a study issued by Verisign, DDoS and DNS-based attacks have increased by over 75% year over year, with the largest attacks peaking at 256 gigabytes per second.
Secondary DNS services could be the answer to this holiday season’s woes. Historically, clients have reported a significant increase in ROI and client retention after implementing DNS Made Easy’s secondary DNS services. Before switching, clients reported losing anywhere from 4 to 18 hours of services due to outages when they were only using a primary DNS provider.
